The Four Cardinal Heroes are a group of ordinary men from modern-day Japan summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to become its saviors. Melromarc is a country plagued by the Waves of Catastrophe that have repeatedly ravaged the land and brought disaster to its citizens for centuries. The four heroes are respectively bestowed a sword, spear, bow, and shield to vanquish these Waves. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, becomes cursed with the fate of being the "Shield Hero." Armed with only a measly shield, Naofumi is belittled and ridiculed by his fellow heroes and the kingdom's people due to his weak offensive capabilities and lackluster personality.

The Devil of the Shield
Tate no Akuma (盾の悪魔)
Naofumi shields Melty from the attacking Knights who accuse him of taking the Princess hostage, before retreating to let the narrative play out. Naofumi finds the pendant on a guard for the Church of Three Heroes, which hates the Shield. A doctored recording of Naofumi's "kidnapping" Melty is shown throughout the Kingdom, turning the Shield Hero into a fugitive.
Unable to reach Shieldfreeden, Naofumi plans to protect Melty so she can fix their situation, and they hike the mountains to reach Siltvelt instead. At night, as the Queen's emissaries follow in secret the group are met by the other three Heroes. Myne makes further accusations against Naofumi and with the Three Heroes still believing her they demand Melty's safe return or else.
